UAB Medicine is Alabama's largest and most comprehensive health system, recognized nationally for world-class patient care, pioneering research, and cutting-edge medical education. We serve over 1.1 million patients annually from every county in Alabama, all 50 states, and countries around the world. Our network includes UAB Hospital, ranked No. 1 in Alabama by U.S. News & World Report, and home to the state's only ACS-verified Level I adult trauma center.
The Neurology Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (NEMU) is an existing 28-bed acute care unit dedicated to providing comprehensive, specialized care for general neurology patients and those with epilepsy. UAB Medicine is home to Alabama's only Level IV Epilepsy Center, the highest designation available from the National Association of Epilepsy Centers. UAB Neurology and Neurosurgery is consistently ranked among the top 50 programs nationally and No. 1 in Alabama.
This unit is currently moving to the new state-of-the-art UAB Rehabilitation Pavilion, opening in 2025. Nurses here have a unique opportunity to work with advanced technology, including continuous video electroencephalograph (EEG) monitoring, which captures and records brain activity to accurately detect and classify seizure events. This technology is critical for providing personalized, appropriate, and precise care. Team members are active participants in an interdisciplinary care team, collaborating alongside neurologists, neurophysiology technologists, and other expert support staff.
