The Department of Mental Health (DMH) assures and provides access to services and supports to meet the mental health needs of individuals of all ages, enabling them to live, work, and participate in their communities. The Department establishes standards to ensure effective and culturally competent care to promote recovery, sets policy, promotes self-determination, protects human rights, and supports mental health training and research.
As a full-time Interpreter for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, you will serve as a vital communication bridge within the DMH Central Office and Area/Site Offices. This role is dedicated to providing proficient, complex, and specialized ASL/English interpreting for Deaf supervisory staff in predominantly mental health settings, including in-patient units, community programs, and with external providers.
Beyond direct interpretation, you will act as a leader within the language access ecosystem. You will coordinate the work of freelance hearing and Deaf interpreters, supervise interpreting interns, and provide education to staff on the appropriate use of interpreter services. Your day-to-day involves navigating combined hearing/Deaf environments to resolve cultural and communication challenges, ensuring that Deaf staff can fully engage with agency operations, clients, and stakeholders. You will also assist in scheduling complex communication events and translating documents as required.
First consideration will be given to applicants who apply within the first 14 days of the posting. The pre-offer process includes a criminal background check as required by the Executive Office of Health and Human Services, and verification of all education, licensure, and certifications in accordance with Human Resources Division guidelines. Selected candidates must maintain active certification or licensure throughout their employment.
If you require a reasonable accommodation during the application or interview process, please contact EOHHS Candidate ADA Requests. For general questions regarding this requisition, contact the Executive Office of Health and Human Services Human Resources at 1-800-510-4122, Ext. #4.
