The Internal Auditor serves as an independent, objective assurance function designed to add value and improve the City's operations. This role is pivotal in helping the City achieve its risk management, internal control, and governance objectives. By conducting audits of City operations and contracts, the Internal Auditor provides public accountability for the use of City tax dollars and serves as a mechanism to investigate suspected fraud, waste, and abuse.
The Internal Auditor acts as an independent source of information and advice for the City Commission on matters of financial and operational importance. The scope of work involves determining whether the City's risk management, internal control, technology, and governance processes are adequate and functioning as intended. This includes ensuring that risks are appropriately identified, financial information is accurate and timely, and City assets are protected and used efficiently.
Reporting directly to the Mayor and City Commissioners, the Internal Auditor maintains the independence required by the Institute of Internal Auditors' International Standards. The role involves developing a flexible, risk-based annual audit plan, implementing audits, and issuing periodic reports to the Commission. The Internal Auditor is authorized to have unrestricted access to all functions, records, property, and personnel to fulfill these responsibilities, while remaining strictly independent from operational or financial duties.
