As a Grounds Maintenance Worker, you will serve as a vital link in maintaining the safety, cleanliness, and aesthetic appeal of our campus grounds. Under the direction of the Maintenance and Operations Supervisor, your work ensures a welcoming environment for students, staff, and the public. This role is unique in its dual focus: you will not only manage the beautification of landscaped areas but also oversee the logistics of shipping, receiving, and distributing essential supplies, equipment, and food.
Your day-to-day responsibilities blend outdoor physical labor with warehouse operations. You will operate a variety of heavy machinery, from rider mowers and tractors to back hoes and forklifts, to mow, edge, and maintain our fields and walkways. Beyond the green spaces, you will manage inventory, inspect shipments for damage, and ensure timely deliveries across various locations. Whether you are applying pest control methods, clearing storm drains after a storm, or organizing the warehouse to prevent spoilage of perishable goods, your attention to detail directly impacts the operational success of the facility.
This position requires adaptability and reliability. You may be called upon to handle emergency grounds maintenance needs, perform overtime during critical situations, and interact appropriately with preschool and school-age children. As a designated Disaster Service Worker under California Government Code 3100, you are also prepared to support the community during natural or manmade emergencies, prioritizing the safety and preservation of lives and property.
This role is primarily performed in an outdoor environment, exposing you to seasonal heat, cold, humidity, rain, and adverse weather. You will work around moving machinery, climb ladders, and handle various chemical agents, requiring strict adherence to safety protocols and the use of appropriate protective equipment such as gloves, masks, and safety glasses. The physical demands are significant, involving lifting, pushing, and pulling heavy loads, as well as sustained physical effort throughout an 8-hour shift.
Candidates must possess a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's License and a satisfactory driving record. While specific certifications for First Aid, CPR, and Forklift operation may be required, training is provided for those who do not yet hold them. A pre-employment physical is mandatory to ensure you can safely perform the essential duties of the role.
