The Division of Epidemiology in the Department of Internal Medicine is dedicated to advancing applied research at the intersection of healthcare, artificial intelligence, and data analysis. As a Graduate Research Assistant, you will play a pivotal role in evaluating and deploying large language models (LLMs) and other machine learning models within healthcare contexts. Your work will center on clinical data pipeline development and natural language processing (NLP)-based chart abstraction. You will operate within secure, access-controlled computing environments, including the University of Utah CHPC and the VA VINCI, utilizing both publicly available data (such as MIMIC-IV) and protected data from the University of Utah Health and the Veterans Health Administration.
This position offers a unique opportunity to engage in meaningful research that bridges technical data science with real-world clinical challenges. You will work under the structured technical oversight of Dr. Senthil Nachimuthu, contributing to reproducible research practices and manuscript preparation while collaborating with clinical and research faculty.
Candidates must be currently enrolled master's students in computing, informatics, data science, biomedical informatics, or a closely related discipline. Due to federal requirements for accessing VA research systems, eligibility for this appointment may be limited based on citizenship or visa status.
