As a Materials Sampling and Testing Specialist, you will serve as a critical technical resource within the VDOT engineering program. Your primary mission is to ensure the integrity and safety of highway construction projects through rigorous materials testing, plant inspections, and field operations. You will bridge the gap between laboratory analysis and on-site execution, providing the data-driven insights necessary to maintain high standards of quality assurance and quality control.
In this role, you will not only perform complex testing procedures but also act as a consultant to inspectors, contractors, and agency management. You will be responsible for interpreting plans, specifications, and contracts to advise on substandard performance, ensuring that all work complies with VDOT, OSHA, and environmental directives. Whether in the laboratory or at a production plant, your work directly impacts the longevity and safety of the state's infrastructure.
Your day will likely alternate between the controlled environment of the laboratory and the dynamic conditions of project sites and production plants. You will plan and coordinate the inspection of materials placement techniques, sampling, and equipment usage. This involves reviewing statistical sampling reports, analyzing mix designs based on current performance data, and ensuring that equipment is properly calibrated and maintained.
A significant portion of your time will be dedicated to technical support and training. You will guide field staff on proper testing procedures, sample preparation, and safety protocols, ensuring that everyone adheres to VDOT safety regulations and contract documents. You will also compile and maintain detailed test results, updating databases and preparing technical reports that inform decision-making for the engineering program.
Candidates must be prepared to obtain required materials certifications within 12 months of employment. The selection process emphasizes technical proficiency in materials test methods, statistical analysis, and the ability to interpret complex engineering plans and specifications.
VDOT employees are expected to abide by the VDOT Code of Ethics and the Commonwealth's Standards of Conduct. We are committed to fostering a safe, orderly, and inclusive work environment where safety is a top priority. We consider qualified applicants regardless of background, valuing the diverse perspectives that contribute to our mission of maintaining safe and reliable transportation systems.
