Begin a fulfilling career with the State of Indiana by joining one of the largest employers in the state. With opportunities across 60+ agencies, the State offers a commitment to work-life balance and the chance to make a real, measurable impact on the lives of Hoosiers.
The Indiana Department of Homeland Security (IDHS) leads the state's emergency planning, operations, first responder training, and fire and building safety. The Indiana State Fire Marshal oversees the Division of Fire and Building Safety, which enforces building codes and includes a fire investigations unit. IDHS certifies and trains thousands of first responders, hosts state-level exercises annually, and supports the State Emergency Operations Center (EOC) during large-magnitude incidents.
This position provides 24/7 statewide situational awareness and emergency coordination support, requiring availability for overnight and weekend shifts. You will serve as a critical link in the state's emergency response infrastructure, monitoring media and intelligence sources to maintain a 24-hour watch log and producing real-time incident reports for local, state, and federal partners.
In this role, you will manage Requests for Information (RFIs) and Requests for Support (RFSs), coordinating emergency resources for agencies such as IDEM, arson and radiation investigators, search and rescue teams, and cyber incident responders. You will support the activation of the State Emergency Operations Center during major incidents and facilitate emergency conference calls with executive leadership. The position demands proficiency with IDHS systems including WebEOC, SharePoint, GR2 Analyst, radios, Everbridge, SmartHub, and GIS, as well as the ability to issue public alerts through IPAWS.
Your day will involve compiling data to assist in the development of emergency tactical and operational plans, statewide analyses, and evaluations. You will help execute tabletop, functional, and full-scale exercises, ensuring consistency and interoperability across local, state, and federal partners. A significant portion of your time will be dedicated to conducting research and data acquisition to support strategic planning elements for state and local agencies.
You will provide guidance to political sub-divisions to help them develop area plans and assist in preparing short and long-range training plans for responders. Depending on agency needs, you may also coordinate district-level training programs and travel to state and regional training exercise sites. The role requires constant assessment of potential disasters and the production of GIS-based visual products for agency leadership to maintain a statewide common operating picture.
