Through education and skills development, you will become proficient in operating a straight truck to pick up and deliver freight between service centers and customer locations. This position is designed for individuals ready to master both driving and essential non-driving duties, such as forklift operation and dock work, ensuring seamless logistics operations.
Your day involves operating straight trucks while performing pre-trip, post-trip, and inter-trip safety inspections. You will handle freight using motorized and manual equipment, including forklifts, pallet jacks, and hand trucks, securing loads with appropriate tools like straps and rope. When necessary, you will recoup or repair damaged freight and verify all required documentation.
Communication is key; you will follow dispatch instructions regarding delays or equipment issues and interact directly with customers to determine pick-up or delivery needs. You may also be asked to collect checks for freight charges and provide leads for potential new business opportunities. The role requires compliance with hazardous material regulations, including confirming placarding matches hazmat shipments, and chaining vehicle tires when conditions require it.
This position requires the ability to work both indoors and outdoors, driving on all types of roads in all weather conditions. You will be exposed to noise, vibration, dust, diesel fumes, and hazardous materials shipped under DOT regulations. Hours may vary based on operational needs.
Candidates must possess a Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or Commercial Learning Permit (CLP) prior to entering the job classification. Automatic transmission CDL restrictions are allowed. Applicants must meet all Department of Transportation (DOT) regulatory requirements under section 391 of the Federal Motor Carrier (FMC) regulations and maintain an acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) based on hiring standards.
