This freelance position serves as an independent, journalistic voice for the News Center, distinct from the internal Corporate Communications team. The contractor brings a neutral, external perspective to produce publish-ready stories on tight, ad-hoc timelines. Unlike full-time employees who manage ongoing programs and internal workflows, this role operates project-by-project, focusing on high-level media expertise and executive-level interviews.
The primary mission is to generate and pitch story ideas based on industry news, national and California healthcare topics, and public sentiment. The role requires producing content on diverse subjects—including public health, social justice, healthcare reform, and innovation—using a conversational, journalistic voice that differs from standard internal messaging.
You will conduct independent interviews with senior executives, C-suite leaders, and external stakeholders, maintaining a professional, third-party reporter posture. This involves assimilating complex healthcare topics and translating them into accessible narratives for a broad public audience. While you may provide ad-hoc writing and editing support for select initiatives (such as specific survey coverage), you will not own ongoing programs or participate in internal strategy development and planning cycles.
Candidates must demonstrate a minimum of 10 years of professional journalism experience, including long-form reporting and feature-style storytelling found in high-quality news publications. The ideal applicant has a proven track record of interviewing high-profile stakeholders with confidence and rapport while maintaining editorial independence.
We value diverse perspectives and are committed to hiring based on merit and expertise. This role specifically seeks individuals with a hard-to-recruit journalism background who can bring an external, neutral voice to our organization.
