This position sits within the Environmental unit of The Hartford's Complex Claims Unit (CCU). CCU claims are often associated with complex fact patterns and coverage issues that may involve multiple years and types of insurance coverage. These claims commonly involve litigation, require subject matter expertise, and can involve higher exposures.
About the Role
The Claim Specialist and Claim Consultant roles are advanced claim handler positions responsible for the management of various complex claims brought against The Hartford's insureds. This position focuses on managing legacy environmental and pollution claims, often involving historical contamination, chemical exposure, and long-tail liability. This requires detailed investigation, legal analysis, and strategic resolution.
As part of a specialized team, you will influence litigation strategies, manage significant financial exposures, and become a subject matter expert in environmental liability and insurance. You will engage your problem-solving capabilities to navigate complex legal issues and provide detailed, impactful recommendations to leadership.
This position can be filled at either the Consultant or Specialist level, based on the candidate's experience. At the Specialist level, you will independently manage all aspects of the most complex, high-value claims. At the Consultant level, you will handle claims of similar complexity with additional managerial oversight and coaching responsibilities.
Hiring Process
Candidates who live near one of our office locations (Hartford, CT; San Antonio, TX; Lake Mary, FL; Phoenix, AZ; or Naperville, IL) will have the expectation of working in an office three days a week (Tuesday through Thursday). Candidates who do not live near an office will have a remote work arrangement, with the expectation of coming into the office as business needs arise.

Key Responsibilities

- check_circleReview and analyze multiple complex insurance policies including general liability and affirmative pollution coverages
- check_circleConduct detailed investigations regarding claims and lawsuits to determine coverage and liability
- check_circleDevelop and articulate clear coverage positions and complex liability assessments
- check_circleConduct complex negotiations to finalize coverage and liability risk transfer against other parties
- check_circleProvide proactive communications to customers and business partners for claim management and resolution
- check_circleAttend mediations and trials as necessary to advance claim resolution
- check_circleManage litigation strategies, counsel, and budgeting while positioning claims for resolution
- check_circleManage accurate expense, reserve, and financial transactions while maintaining up-to-date claims metrics
- check_circleParticipate in audits, projects, and training initiatives to share expertise and contribute to broader goals
Requirements
- verified5+ years general liability claim handling experience
- verifiedExperience with commercial general liability claims (Consultant)
- verifiedExperience with environmental or latent injury claims (Specialist)
- verifiedExperience in handling affirmative/defensive risk transfer
- verifiedProficiency with MS Office (Word and Excel)
- verifiedProficiency handling litigated claims
- verifiedActive Property & Casualty State Insurance Adjuster license or ability to obtain within 3 months
- verifiedBachelor's degree strongly preferred
- verified10+ years long-tail claim handling experience (preferred)
- verifiedJD, advanced degree, or environmental consulting discipline experience (preferred)
Nice to Have
Bachelor's degree. 10+ years of long-tail claim handling experience. JD, other advanced degree, or experience in an environmental consulting discipline (such as geology, hydrology, ecology, or environmental engineering).
