Since the closure of area mills in the early 2000s, organizations in the Katahdin Woods and Waters region have focused on revitalizing the area as a four-season recreation destination. While many agencies manage lands for public use, there have historically been fewer opportunities for residents to learn about careers at public lands agencies. Additionally, the National Monument often struggles to recruit summer employees due to a lack of local housing.
This project aims to bridge that gap by introducing community members to career opportunities within the National Park Service and expanding awareness of work available in the region. The establishment of the national monument on former lumber company lands was initially controversial; however, an active outreach presence at local community events has proven effective in engaging residents. This role is designed to build capacity for the monument by extending its reach into local communities and fostering a new generation of stewards.
