The Movement Innovation Collaborative (MIC) is a new entity dedicated to deepening and expanding the capacity, impact, and sustainability of California grassroots movements for racial justice and social transformation. Operating as a movement lab, we bolster changemakers and organizations to unlock new approaches and catalyze innovations in building durable people power. We provide space and support for organizations to experiment and learn together, helping to spread what works across communities by turning experiments into new playbooks that enable bolder change for all.
The Communications Director serves as the steward of MIC’s brand and narrative, responsible for owning and executing a communications strategy that ensures the organization shows up clearly, consistently, and compellingly to movement partners, funders, leaders, and the broader field. This role translates high-level strategy into daily practice, bridging the gap between complex infrastructure work and clear, compelling stories grounded in impact and people. You will operationalize MIC’s messaging platform across all channels, ensuring a consistent tone that avoids sounding scripted while supporting staff, board, and partners in communicating in alignment. The position requires a unique ability to manage up, across, and down, working directly with Co-Executive Directors and program teams to shape executive voice and public-facing communications as an integrated component of the overall strategy.
MIC is committed to a thorough and respectful hiring process designed to assess both professional fit and cultural alignment. Candidates will be evaluated on their ability to navigate ambiguity while building structure and clarity. The organization utilizes a 90-day trial period for all new hires, allowing both the employee and the organization to ensure a great fit through ongoing feedback and a formal review of performance, adaptability, and cultural alignment.
MIC’s salaries and benefits reflect our deep commitment to collective care and sustainability. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees. We encourage those who see alignment with our mission and believe they have the relevant skills and experience to apply. We are an equal-opportunity employer dedicated to providing an inclusive work environment where everyone is treated with fairness, dignity, and respect.
