About the Role
Charge nurses at HCH serve as vital leaders within the Emergency Department and Medical/Surgical units. While this position is not a formal supervisory role, it acts as a critical operational anchor for the shift. The charge nurse oversees the daily management of all ED patients while maintaining a lighter medical/surgical assignment. This role involves setting up staffing for the upcoming shift and dynamically adjusting resources as patient census and staffing needs fluctuate.
Beyond clinical oversight, the charge nurse guides and supports the team to ensure high standards of care and patient experience are consistently maintained. The role includes taking direct patient care assignments each shift alongside these leadership duties. Charge nurses typically attend one meeting per month and participate in special projects and quality initiatives specific to the charge function. The team reports to the ED & Med/Surg Managers and collaborates closely with the Director of Nursing (DON).
