U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is the nation's premier federal agency charged with securing our borders and protecting our country. As part of a workforce of over 60,000, Border Patrol Agents strive to safeguard the American people by deterring illicit activity and enhancing the nation's economic prosperity. This role offers a unique opportunity to join a team defined by camaraderie, pride, and a shared purpose, working alongside highly trained professionals in the Federal Security and Public Safety sector.
This is a full-time, career Law Enforcement Officer (LEO) position designed for individuals who love protecting their community and are looking for a change of scenery. Whether your background is in military police units or state and local law enforcement, you will have the chance to apply your skills in a dynamic environment. The role involves detecting and questioning individuals suspected of violating immigration and customs laws, preventing the entry of aliens and smugglers through surveillance, and interpreting physical evidence of illegal entry.
Day-to-day operations are diverse and demanding, ranging from farm and building checks to patrolling international boundaries and coastal waterways. Agents utilize a variety of government assets, including vehicles, horses, vessels, ATVs, and snowmobiles, often conducting night operations with infrared scopes. The position requires making arrests, exercising sound judgment with firearms, and analyzing information rapidly to make prompt decisions.
The application process begins by clicking the "Apply" button on the CBP website, which links to the CBP Talent Network registration page. Candidates must select "Border Patrol Agent" as their Position of Interest and complete pre-screening questions. Following this, you will receive links to the Border Patrol Agent Job Opening Announcements (JOAs) on USAJOBS to complete the formal application, including the submission of resumes and supporting documents.
Selection is based on a comprehensive evaluation of your resume, supporting documents, and the BPA Entrance Exam. Successful candidates will be detailed to the U.S. Border Patrol Academy in Artesia, New Mexico, for approximately six months of intensive instruction covering immigration laws, law enforcement tactics, driver training, physical techniques, and firearms proficiency.
Duty assignments are determined at the time of offer based on operational needs and may include prioritized locations along the Southwest Border. While candidates can select preferred mission-critical locations from a wide range of sectors (including Big Bend, El Paso, Tucson, and others), assignments may not align with first-choice preferences. Relocation may be required to fulfill the agency's mission needs.
