Boatswain's Mates are the seamanship and deck operations experts who form the backbone of a ship's crew. As the primary experts in handling small boats, maintaining topside equipment, and supporting cargo and flight deck operations, you will keep the fleet ready to sail and fight. This role is defined by hands-on, outdoor work in varied weather and sea conditions, requiring you to stand watch as a helmsman, lookout, or Boatswain's Mate of the Watch.
You will operate in a physically demanding maritime environment, performing high-tempo evolutions during replenishments and amphibious operations. Success in this role relies on close teamwork within the deck department and the ability to lead junior Sailors as you advance through the ranks.
Your journey begins with Recruit Training followed by Boatswain's Mate A School in Great Lakes, Illinois. Advancement is driven by performance, time in rate, completion of required qualifications, and advancement exams, offering historically strong promotion opportunities for qualified Sailors. You will gain on-the-job qualifications in seamanship, small boat handling, deck operations, and watchstanding.
The Navy offers robust education benefits through standard programs, including Tuition Assistance, the Post-9/11 GI Bill, ACE-recommended college credit for training, Navy COOL-funded certifications, and USMAP apprenticeships. Specific options depend on your status, training, and current Navy policy.
Assignments take place on surface ships and at shore installations in the United States and overseas. You will work on decks, piers, small boats, and flight decks across a range of sea states, adhering to strict safety procedures. Pay, benefits, and service commitments follow standard Navy Active and/or Reserve policies, including basic pay, allowances, health coverage, and retirement options.
To serve, you must meet general enlistment standards, including U.S. citizenship or legal residency, a high school diploma, age limits, and medical, vision, and dental standards. You must also achieve required test scores and meet character and conduct standards. Additional qualifications include physical strength and stamina for maritime work and the ability to communicate clearly in a shipboard environment.
For the most current information on incentives, bonuses, and eligibility, applicants must confirm details with an official Navy recruiter. This description is a general overview and does not guarantee specific assignments, training, or outcomes, as actual opportunities depend on Navy needs and current policy.
