The Assistant Paraeducator (Title) serves as a vital support member within the classroom, working under the direct supervision of the certified classroom teacher. The primary mission is to facilitate the instruction of basic academic skills to students while adhering to guidelines established by the Kansas State Department of Education, Wichita Public Schools, and the specific curriculum of the site.
This role is designed to create a safe and healthful environment for both students and staff. The assistant supports the educational process by reinforcing learning concepts through individual or group activities, assisting with lesson assignments, and helping to modify activities to meet the unique needs of individual students. Additionally, the position plays a key role in data collection and record-keeping regarding student performance, as well as maintaining learning centers and instructional materials.
The position requires adaptability to various weather conditions and the physical stamina to walk long distances, stand for extended periods, and perform tasks such as bending, twisting, and lifting up to 20 pounds. In emergency situations, the assistant must be prepared to react immediately to ensure the safety and welfare of students and staff, which may include the use of physical restraint techniques.
Professionally, the role demands a high degree of punctuality, confidentiality, and a positive attitude. Employees are expected to dress in a manner that reflects a positive image of USD 259 and to interact with a diverse population of students, colleagues, and vendors with tact and diplomacy. The assistant must be proficient with technology, including SMART boards, iPads, and standard office equipment, while strictly complying with district guidelines for their use.
Candidates must possess a High School Diploma or GED equivalent. For positions in Title schools, a minimum of 48 accredited college credits (verifiable via transcript) or a passing score on a state-approved assessment is required. The role is Non-Exempt under FLSA status.
