About the Team

The Office of the Governor serves as the central hub for the executive branch of Washington State government. As a new position within this office, the Associate General Counsel role sits at the intersection of high-stakes legal strategy and public service. You will work closely with the Governor's Chief Legal Counsel and Deputy Legal Counsel to provide strategic guidance on complex issues affecting the state. The environment is fast-paced and intellectually engaging, deeply connected to the mission of serving Washingtonians.

About the Role

This position offers a unique opportunity to work on meaningful, high-impact issues ranging from healthcare and immigration to public safety and infrastructure. You will be responsible for researching and analyzing legal issues, providing written and verbal briefings to the Governor and office staff, and guiding litigation involving the Governor's Office and state agencies. Additionally, you will support critical processes such as judicial appointments and clemency.

If you are motivated by a desire to serve the public and want your work to have a direct impact on communities across Washington, this role allows you to help shape policy and decision-making at the highest levels of state government. The work requires a genuine commitment to the state and its residents, blending rigorous legal analysis with the nuances of government operations.

Work Environment

The physical office is located in Olympia, WA. This is a hybrid position that allows for teleworking, though you may need to travel to in-person activities, meetings, and events according to business needs. We offer flexible work schedules to support a healthy work-life balance.

Application Process

Once you decide to apply, you will complete an online application to showcase your qualifications. Please note that a real person will read your application; we do not use AI or other technology to screen or reject candidates. To ensure your qualifications are accurately assessed, please provide clear and detailed information about your work history.

Required Application Materials:

  • Cover Letter: Describing your interest in and qualifications for this specific position.
  • Resume: Detailing your applicable experience and education.
  • Legal Writing Sample: 10 pages or less, written and edited by you.
  • References: At least three professional references with contact information.

We will contact top candidates directly to schedule interviews. If you need reasonable accommodation during the application or interview process, please contact us at TalentAcquisition@ofm.wa.gov or call 7-1-1 or 1-800-833-6384. An ASL interpreter is available for all deaf and hard-of-hearing applicants.

Our Culture and Commitment to Diversity

We foster a culture of integrity, innovation, inclusion, and belonging. We value both learned and lived experiences, believing that diversity makes us stronger. The Office of the Governor is an equal opportunity employer committed to creating a working environment that includes and respects cultural, racial, ethnic, sexual orientation, and gender identity diversity.

We are most interested in finding the best candidate for the job, regardless of their background. We encourage candidates from less traditional backgrounds to apply; if you have transferable experience, please share it in your application. Women, racial and ethnic minorities, persons with disabilities, persons over 40 years of age, and disabled and Vietnam-era veterans are specifically encouraged to apply.
