The Division of Multi-Disciplinary Design (MDD) is housed within the College of Architecture + Planning at the University of Utah. We promote design education across disciplines through an innovative and applied curriculum that integrates artistic, technical, and theoretical frameworks. Our community of academics, professionals, and students engages in hands-on design work to meet the needs of a rapidly changing world.
Our program encompasses physical and digital artifacts at various scales, as well as service and systems design. The curriculum is strategically designed around Studio Practice, Technical Competency, Historical and Theoretical Foundations, and Applied Practice. This multi-disciplinary approach leverages expertise from architecture, fine arts, communication, business, engineering, and computer science to foster critical analysis, inventive thinking, and cross-disciplinary collaboration.
Scholarship and creative activity within MDD reflect a broad, practice-driven approach. Faculty produce diverse outputs including peer-reviewed journal articles, patents, design exhibitions, book chapters, funded research projects, interactive media, and public installations. We prioritize inquiry-driven learning, visual literacy, methodological experimentation, and collaborative capabilities, ensuring research remains both theoretically rigorous and practically applied.
