Founded in 1967 in Raleigh, NC, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals of Wake County (SPCA Wake) is a progressive, private non-profit dedicated to rescuing, healing, and adopting more than 4,000 pets annually. With locations in Raleigh and Garner, we assist over 30,000 families and individuals each year, operating under the vision of creating a humane community for pets and people. We never place a time limit on how long animals stay at our shelter.
Our culture is built on six core values: Hell, Yeah!, Be Kind, Do What You Say, Forward Focused, Loose & Wiggly, and Drop the Mic. We believe in creating a positive work environment that values employees just as much as our mission, offering a workplace where you can make a tangible difference every day.
As an Animal Care Specialist, you will be the frontline guardian for shelter animals entering our care or waiting for adoption. This role is about much more than cleaning kennels; it is about improving the quality of life for homeless pets through training, feeding, exercise, and socialization. You will practice fear-free animal handling at all times, working with a dynamic mix of volunteers and customers to ensure every animal feels safe and cared for.
While this is a front-line position, we do not consider it "entry-level." It requires a dedicated effort to build the specific skills needed to excel for the betterment of the animals. You will be part of a team that balances daily scheduled activities with the flexibility to respond to the unique needs of each pet. Success in this role requires comfort with physical demands, including kneeling, crouching, reaching overhead, and lifting up to 50 lbs.
We are looking for candidates who are equally comfortable communicating with pets and people, possess strong time management skills, and have a genuine love for all animals, not just dogs or cats. Only the most qualified candidates will be contacted for interviews. Please note that we do not accept phone calls or emails; our team will reach out to you directly if you are selected for the next steps.
