The Douglas County Legal Aid Clinic is an in-house nonprofit legal aid clinic within the KU School of Law. We provide critical legal representation to low-income individuals facing a range of legal matters in Kansas municipal and state courts. Serving an average of 250 cases annually, our team consists of two faculty members and a dedicated group of students who work collaboratively to deliver high-quality legal services to the community.
This student- and community-facing position serves as the operational backbone of our clinic, blending litigation support, office management, and educational mentorship. You will be responsible for the day-to-day functioning of a small law firm environment, ensuring that faculty and students have the administrative infrastructure needed to serve our clients effectively.
Your day will involve managing the front office presence, acting as the first point of contact for prospective clients, and coordinating with a network of community resources. You will oversee the electronic case management system, ensuring ethical and precise handling of court calendars, document filing, and discovery organization. Beyond litigation support, you will manage office logistics, including equipment, supplies, and IT coordination, while also handling sensitive financial duties such as trust account maintenance and grant reporting.
A unique aspect of this role is the educational component. You will collaborate with faculty to recruit, onboard, and train law students, modeling excellent office practices and helping to assess student performance. This position requires a high degree of independence and creativity, offering a collaborative environment where you can directly impact the success of our public service mission.
