The Institute for Justice (IJ) is a non-profit public interest law firm dedicated to defending individual liberty. Our Activism team advances policy reforms at the state and local level to expand economic liberty, protect property rights, increase government accountability, and improve access to justice. Through research, outreach, coalition building, and advocacy, we work to change laws and remove barriers that limit opportunity.
We are seeking a passionate Access to Justice Policy Coordinator to join our Activism team as part of our newest initiative, Counsel Unbound. Based at our headquarters in Arlington, VA, this role is central to our mission of rethinking who is allowed to provide legal help.
Millions of Americans face civil legal problems without meaningful assistance—not because solutions don't exist, but because outdated laws make it a crime for anyone but a licensed attorney to provide most legal help. Counsel Unbound challenges these unauthorized practice of law (UPL) rules through policy reform and public education, working to open the door for nonlawyers to provide basic legal guidance.
In this position, you will work primarily on access-to-justice issues, engaging in community outreach, research, and the analysis of statutes and court rules to develop policy recommendations. Your day-to-day will involve tracking news and opportunities, hosting events and roundtables, collaborating with the media, writing for diverse audiences, organizing public information campaigns, and lobbying. You will be supported by enthusiastic team leaders in a close-knit environment that offers unique opportunities for professional development and long-term advancement.
To apply, please submit a resume, a writing sample, and a cover letter detailing why you are interested in working at IJ. Please note: No phone calls, please.
IJ is an equal opportunity employer. We value a diverse workplace and believe that a variety of perspectives strengthens our work.
Studies have shown that women and people of color are less likely to apply to jobs unless they meet every single qualification. At IJ, we encourage you to apply even if your past experience doesn't align perfectly with every requirement listed. If you are excited about this role, you may be just the right candidate for this or other roles.
