City Year is an AmeriCorps program dedicated to helping students across schools succeed. Our teams of AmeriCorps members provide support to students, classrooms, and the whole school, ensuring that students receive a high-quality education that prepares them with the skills and mindset to thrive and contribute to their community.
As a Student Success Coach and Mentor, your service will focus on coaching and mentoring elementary, middle, and/or high school students. You will help these students earn academic success, improve their attendance, and develop positive behaviors at school. This role is designed for those who want to build themselves, give back, and are ready to change the world.
You will plan and monitor individual student progress and work with teachers on whole-class instruction, breakout spaces, and other in-class student assistance. While experience in these tasks is not necessary, you will receive 2-4 weeks of training at the beginning of the year to support you. You will work with partner teachers and school staff every step of the way to create an engaging, safe, and healthy classroom space.
Your day-to-day will involve working with identified students one-on-one and in small groups to develop literacy and/or math skills. You will create and implement behavior management systems and develop interpersonal skills throughout the day using proven strategies of learning, practicing, reflection, and repetition. Additionally, you will support whole-school initiatives by conducting extended day and virtual programming, including academic enrichment, homework support, recreation, student clubs, service learning, and leadership development.
