City Year is an AmeriCorps program dedicated to helping students across schools succeed. Our teams of AmeriCorps members provide support to students, classrooms, and the whole school, ensuring that students receive a high-quality education that prepares them with the skills and mindset to thrive and contribute to their community.
As a City Year AmeriCorps Member, you will serve as a student success coach and mentor for elementary, middle, and/or high school students. Your mission is to help students earn academic success, improve their attendance, and develop positive behaviors at school. You will plan and monitor individual student progress while working closely with teachers on whole-class instruction, breakout spaces, and in-class student assistance.
You do not need prior experience in all these tasks. We provide 2-4 weeks of training at the beginning of the year to support you, and you will work with partner teachers and school staff every step of the way. Your day will involve coaching students one-on-one and in small groups, developing literacy and math skills through varied learning activities, and creating engaging, safe, and healthy classroom spaces.
Beyond the classroom, you will support whole-school initiatives to increase engagement with students and families. This includes conducting extended day and virtual programming before, during, and after school, such as academic enrichment, homework support, recreation, and leadership development. You will also help create and co-lead events that recognize student growth and achievement.
City Year AmeriCorps members are as varied as the communities we serve. We are looking for individuals who want to build themselves, give back, and are ready to change the world. To be eligible, you must be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident (DACA status is not eligible at this time), be between 17 and 25 years old by July 1, 2025, and have a GED, high school diploma, some college experience, or a college degree. You must be able to begin your service by July/August 2025 and agree to complete a background check.
