Established in 1925 as Doullut & Erwin in New Orleans, the company initially specialized in waterfront and heavy construction projects, adding airport design services shortly thereafter. During World War II, the organization contributed significantly to the war effort by designing and constructing U.S. Navy shipyards, Liberty Ships, and various dock facilities. Following the conflict, the firm relocated to Mobile under the leadership of David Volkert, who acquired the business in 1954. The company was officially renamed Volkert in 1963.
