This position is a critical component of our fabrication and maintenance operations, responsible for operating hand-welding and flame-cutting equipment to join work pieces together. The role demands a high level of precision and safety, utilizing various welding methods such as MIG and Stick to transform raw materials into finished products. You will interpret complex welding blueprints, assembly instructions, and bills of material to set up components according to strict specifications.
The day-to-day involves a dynamic mix of technical fabrication and physical labor. You will retrieve assembled materials, cut them to precise measurements using powered saws, and prepare parts with angle grinders before executing single and multi-pass welds in various positions, including vertical, horizontal, and overhead. Beyond the welding itself, the role requires maintaining welding proficiency in accordance with ISO, AAR, and internal standards like Progress Rail QSP 4.9. You will also be responsible for the preventative maintenance of welding machines, including changing wire and gas bottles, and may be trained on advanced machinery such as Robot Welders.
Safety is paramount in this environment. As a safety-sensitive position, you will work in and around live tracks and heavy equipment, requiring strict adherence to safety policies, including the use of blue flags and all required personal protective equipment (PPE). The work environment can be challenging, ranging from indoor non-temperature-controlled spaces to outdoor settings exposed to all weather elements. The role involves significant physical activity, including lifting up to 50 lbs, working in confined spaces, and operating at heights exceeding 6 feet with proper fall protection.
