Providence Public Schools District (PPSD) seeks an exceptional Grade 1 Elementary English as a Second Language (ESL) Teacher to join our community of educators, students, and stakeholders. This is an exciting opportunity for teachers who seek a challenging yet rewarding teaching experience within a diverse and dynamic environment.
We serve approximately 22,000 students across 37 elementary, middle, and high schools. Approximately 55% of our students come from homes where English is not the primary language spoken. Combined, our students and families speak 55 different languages and hail from 91 countries of origin. In PPSD, teachers and leaders set high expectations for academic achievement, provide equal access to differentiated instruction, and endeavor to close the achievement and opportunity gap among historically marginalized subgroups. PPSD is a great place for those who desire an environment that supports their creativity and ingenuity, and respects their credentials and abilities as a teacher.
Under the direction of the school principal, this role plans and provides English as a Second Language instruction to students identified as needing support through the district's annual English Language Proficiency assessment. The ESL Teacher serves as a resource for information regarding students from diverse language backgrounds and accelerates the acquisition of Academic English through the academic content of math, language arts, science, and social studies.
The Rhode Island Right to Read Act, passed in July 2019, requires educators to exhibit proficiency in or awareness of the Science of Reading and Structured Literacy. Please be advised that this position requires Structured Literacy Proficiency Level within one year of hire.
Providence Public Schools is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer that is actively seeking to increase minority recruitment among its administrators and teaching staff. All programs are open to all individuals, regardless of their background.
