About the Role
As a Regional Surgical Technologist at Geisinger, you will assist surgeons with procedures related to the care of patients of all ages during surgical intervention. You will assist in the coordination of treatments with other disciplines. This role requires you to connect patients to clinical equipment as needed and practice aseptic techniques while preparing for surgery, including scrubbing, applying surgical gown, gloving, draping and setting up instrument table. You will actively participate in surgical Time and out and OR Briefing according to the universal protocol. You will identify the correct surgical site with the circulating RN and surgeon before incision of operative procedures.
You will maintain an accurate account of supplies including sponges, needles and instruments, and verify the count with the circulating nurse at the end of the procedure. You will prepare, identify and verify all specimens obtained during the surgical procedure, and dispose of linens, needles and sharps in appropriate containers. You will assess wounds and apply or change sterile dressing as instructed by the RN. You will maintain and document universal precautions and initiate emergency procedures. You will participate in the admission and discharge process, and perform billing as appropriate for services rendered or equipment used. You will participate in on-call rotations of OR and act as a preceptor for students assigned to the surgical unit. You will adhere to all policies, protocols and standards of care, and standards of care. You will perform quality control monitoring (QA and QI and QE). You will perform additional duties including specimen collection, pleure-vac and traction set up, patient transport and post-mortem care. You will assure all medications and solutions are labeled, under the RN's supervision.
