The U.S. Secret Service operates as a federal law enforcement agency headquartered in Washington, DC, with a presence extending through more than 150 offices across the United States and international locations. Founded in 1865, the organization was originally created to combat the counterfeiting of U.S. currency. Over time, congressional mandates expanded its responsibilities to include two primary missions: the protection of national and visiting foreign leaders, and the investigation of related financial crimes. This dual focus ensures the safety of key figures while maintaining the integrity of the nation's financial systems. The agency continues to serve the public through these critical law enforcement functions, combining historical roots with modern operational requirements to address evolving security challenges.
