The Contingent is a 501(c)(3) venture non-profit dedicated to sparking and sustaining initiatives that empower leaders and mobilize communities for the common good. Since our inception, we have leveraged the perspectives, skills, and needs of people of color and low-income community members to challenge the status quo and positively transform our communities. We ask hard questions, take risks, and link arms with our neighbors, including business partners, faith communities, and government agencies.
From mentoring and mobilizing volunteers to restructuring systems designed to work for some at the expense of others, we prioritize empowering and mobilizing leaders to transform their communities. Our mission extends to serving vulnerable children, youth, and families, with a deep commitment to increasing the diversity of leadership in the communities we serve.
You will join a brilliant engineering team to design and build innovative products that support our mission. As a Software Engineer, you will engage in the full lifecycle of product development, from design and development to maintenance, testing, and evaluation. Your work will directly contribute to the operational and technical excellence of our programs, including "Every Child" and "The Script."
In this dynamic, fast-paced environment, you will collaborate closely with team members to build and test products while maintaining clear documentation. You will actively participate in sprint ceremonies to prioritize backlog items, ensuring that upcoming workloads are correctly aligned with our goals. This role requires a curious problem-solver who can handle ambiguity, drive work autonomously, and communicate product progress and blockers proactively. You will thrive in a lean organization with limited administrative support, where a "hands-on" approach and a growth mindset are essential.
We are dedicated to building a diverse, inclusive, and authentic workplace. We value multi-cultural intelligence, intentional listening, and respect for all backgrounds. We seek individuals who possess cultural and emotional intelligence and can work effectively with diverse groups of constituents and leaders. A deep commitment to serving vulnerable families and a passion for operational excellence are fundamental to our team culture. We encourage continuous growth and welcome constructive feedback to enhance our processes and program efficiencies.

A Note on Qualifications: Don't meet every single requirement? Studies have shown that women and people of color are less likely to apply to jobs unless they meet every single qualification. At The Contingent, we are dedicated to building a diverse, inclusive, and authentic workplace. If you are excited about this role but your experience does not align perfectly with every qualification in the job description, we encourage you to apply anyway. You may be just the right candidate for this or other roles.
Equal employment opportunities and having a diverse staff are fundamental principles of The Contingent. We consider qualified applicants regardless of background. All employment at The Contingent is "at will" and may be terminated by either the employee or the employer at any time for any reason. Upon hire, the employee agrees to undergo a 90-day probationary period, which provides additional structure, scheduled check-in meetings, and opportunities to receive and give feedback.
