Master-at-Arms (MA) Sailors form the backbone of the Navy's security, antiterrorism, and law enforcement capabilities. Their mission is to protect people, installations, ships, and strategic assets both at home and abroad. From conducting force protection patrols on piers to managing corrections and investigations, MAs operate in diverse environments ranging from expeditionary units to high-value unit escorts.
This role exists to ensure the safety and security of Navy operations through a combination of policing, physical security, and tactical response. MAs are the first line of defense, responsible for controlling access to secure areas, inspecting vehicles and personnel, and maintaining order during special events or emergencies.
You will work in a fast-paced, armed, and safety-critical environment where attention to detail and professional judgment are paramount. Your day may involve standing sentry at access control posts, responding to calls for service, or investigating incidents and traffic accidents. The role demands 24/7 coverage, meaning you will frequently work rotating shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays.
You will face stressful situations requiring calm decision-making and strong communication skills. As you progress, you will take on increasing responsibility, potentially supervising junior personnel or qualifying for specialized billets such as a patrol supervisor, watch commander, or military working dog handler. The work is physically demanding and often requires operating small arms, crew-served weapons, and security vehicles or boats.
Assignments vary widely, taking you to Navy installations in the U.S. and overseas, aboard aircraft carriers and other ships, or with expeditionary security units. You will work primarily on bases, piers, flight lines, and in security operations centers. The role offers opportunities for overseas, forward-deployed, and dependent-restricted tours that count as sea duty. You will work in close integration with other security forces, Marine units, NCIS, and joint or host-nation partners depending on your specific billet.
Your journey begins with Recruit Training followed by Master-at-Arms Class "A" School at Lackland AFB, where you will learn the fundamentals of law enforcement, weapons handling, antiterrorism, and security operations. Advancement is driven by progressive on-the-job qualification through Personnel Qualification Standards and unit training.
The Navy offers extensive pathways for career-long development. You can pursue advanced schools to earn Navy Enlisted Classifications (NECs) as a Military Working Dog Handler, Harbor Security Coxswain, Corrections Specialist, or Criminal Investigator. Leadership development is a core component, with opportunities to earn warfare qualifications (such as ESWS, EAWS, or NWS) and participate in senior enlisted leader programs.
To join the Master-at-Arms community, you must meet general enlistment standards, including U.S. citizenship or legal residency, a high school diploma, and eligibility for a security clearance. You must also meet strict medical, vision, dental, and physical fitness standards, as well as character and conduct requirements.
Interested candidates should contact an official Navy recruiter to discuss current incentives, eligibility, and the application process. Reserve opportunities may exist for qualified prior-service members or SELRES applicants, often requiring specific training or NECs.
The U.S. Navy is an equal opportunity employer. We consider qualified applicants regardless of background, race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, or veteran status. We are committed to building a diverse and inclusive force capable of meeting the complex security challenges of the modern world.
