Master-at-Arms (MA) Sailors form the backbone of the Navy's security, antiterrorism, and law enforcement capabilities. From conducting force protection patrols on piers to managing corrections and investigations, MAs operate in diverse environments ranging from expeditionary units to aircraft carriers. What to Expect

This is a fast-paced, armed, and safety-critical career where attention to detail, sound judgment, and professionalism are paramount. MAs work in a 24/7 environment, frequently rotating through shifts that include nights, weekends, and holidays to ensure continuous security coverage. The role involves exposure to high-stress situations, requiring calm decision-making during emergencies, accidents, or criminal activities. As you progress, you will take on increasing responsibility, qualifying for specialized billets like patrol supervisor or watch commander while maintaining rigorous standards in weapons handling, tactical skills, and physical fitness.

Work Environment

Assignments vary widely, taking you to Navy installations in the U.S. and overseas, aboard ships, or with expeditionary security units. You will work primarily on bases, piers, flight lines, and in security operations centers, often integrating closely with Marine units, NCIS, and joint partners. The role offers opportunities for overseas and forward-deployed tours, including dependent-restricted assignments that count as sea duty. Whether operating security boats, managing kennels, or patrolling in vehicles, the work demands adaptability and a commitment to serving in uniformed law enforcement roles.

Training & Advancement

Your journey begins with Recruit Training, followed by Master-at-Arms Class "A" School at Lackland AFB, where you will master the fundamentals of law enforcement, weapons handling, and antiterrorism. Career development is driven by progressive on-the-job qualification through Personnel Qualification Standards and unit training. You will have access to advanced schools to earn Navy Enlisted Classifications (NECs) as a Military Working Dog Handler, Harbor Security Coxswain, Corrections Specialist, or Criminal Investigator. Long-term growth is supported by leadership courses, warfare qualifications (such as ESWS or EAWS), and senior enlisted leader programs.

Hiring Process & Application

To join the Master-at-Arms community, you must meet general enlistment standards, including U.S. citizenship or eligible residency, a high school diploma, and specific medical and physical fitness requirements. Most billets require eligibility for a security clearance and a clean legal history suitable for armed law enforcement duties. Prior-service Sailors from other ratings may be able to convert into MA based on community needs.
