Master-at-Arms (MA) Sailors form the backbone of the Navy's security, antiterrorism, and law enforcement capabilities. Their mission is to protect people, installations, ships, and strategic assets both at home and abroad. From conducting force protection patrols on piers to managing access control on aircraft carriers, MAs ensure safety in diverse environments ranging from expeditionary units to strategic weapons facilities.
This role is designed for individuals ready to serve in a fast-paced, armed, and safety-critical environment. You will be responsible for enforcing regulations, investigating incidents, and maintaining order during special events or emergencies. As you progress, you will take on increasing responsibility, potentially specializing in areas such as military working dogs, harbor security, corrections, or criminal investigations.
Life as a Master-at-Arms involves frequent duty in rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays, to provide 24/7 coverage. You will work in close integration with security forces, Marine units, NCIS, and joint partners, often operating in high-stress situations that require calm decision-making and strong communication.
The career path offers continuous development through ongoing qualification in weapons, use of force, and tactical skills. You will advance through Personnel Qualification Standards and unit training, eventually qualifying for specialized billets such as patrol supervisor, watch commander, or investigator. Opportunities for overseas, forward-deployed, and dependent-restricted tours are common, counting as sea duty for rotation purposes.
Your journey begins with Recruit Training, followed by Master-at-Arms Class "A" School at Lackland AFB. Here, you will learn the fundamentals of law enforcement, weapons handling, antiterrorism, and security operations. Following this, you will report to an operational security force billet at an installation, ship, or expeditionary unit.
Career growth is supported by advanced schools that award Navy Enlisted Classifications (NECs) for specialized roles like Military Working Dog Handler, Harbor Security Coxswain, and Criminal Investigator. You will also have access to leadership courses and warfare qualifications (such as ESWS, EAWS, or NWS) to further your professional development.
To join the Master-at-Arms community, you must meet general enlistment standards, including U.S. citizenship or eligible residency, a high school diploma, and specific medical, vision, and dental standards. A clean legal history and strong moral character are essential due to the armed nature of the duties.
Interested candidates should contact an official Navy recruiter to discuss eligibility, current incentives, and specific program requirements. Prior-service Sailors from other ratings may also be eligible to convert into the MA rating based on community needs and screening results.
The U.S. Navy is an equal opportunity employer. We consider qualified applicants regardless of background, race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, or veteran status. Our commitment to diversity strengthens our ability to protect the nation and its interests.
