Master-at-Arms (MA) Sailors form the backbone of the Navy's security, antiterrorism, and law enforcement capabilities. Their mission is to protect people, installations, ships, and strategic assets both at home and abroad. From conducting force protection patrols on piers to managing corrections and investigations, MAs operate in diverse environments ranging from aircraft carriers and expeditionary units to strategic weapons facilities.
This role exists to ensure the safety and security of Navy operations through a combination of policing, physical security, and specialized tactical skills. MAs are the first line of defense, responsible for controlling access, inspecting vehicles and personnel, and responding to emergencies with calm judgment and professionalism.
You will work in a fast-paced, armed, and safety-critical environment where attention to detail is paramount. Your duties may include standing sentry at access control posts, enforcing traffic regulations, investigating incidents, and operating security vehicles or boats. The role demands flexibility, with frequent duty in rotating shifts—including nights, weekends, and holidays—to provide 24/7 coverage.
As you progress, you will take on increasing responsibility, potentially supervising junior personnel or qualifying for specialized billets such as a Military Working Dog Handler, Harbor Security Coxswain, or Criminal Investigator. You will work closely with other security forces, Marine units, NCIS, and joint partners, often in forward-deployed or overseas locations.
The journey begins with Recruit Training, followed by Master-at-Arms Class "A" School at Lackland AFB. Here, you will learn the fundamentals of law enforcement, weapons handling, antiterrorism, and security operations. Career development is continuous, featuring on-the-job qualification through Personnel Qualification Standards and opportunities for advanced schools that award specialized Navy Enlisted Classifications.
Long-term growth includes leadership courses, warfare qualifications, and senior enlisted leader programs. Reserve opportunities may also exist for qualified prior-service members or SELRES applicants, often requiring specific training or follow-on schools.
To join the Master-at-Arms community, you must meet general enlistment standards, including U.S. citizenship or eligible residency, a high school diploma, and specific medical, vision, and dental standards. A clean legal history and strong moral character are essential for armed law enforcement duties.
For specific details on current incentives, bonuses, and eligibility, you must confirm with an official Navy recruiter. This description serves as a general overview; actual assignments, training, and outcomes depend on Navy needs, individual performance, and current policy.
The Navy is an equal opportunity employer. We consider qualified applicants regardless of background, race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, or protected veteran status.
