Master-at-Arms (MA) Sailors serve as the Navy's core security, antiterrorism, and law enforcement capability. Their mission is to protect people, installations, ships, and strategic assets both at home and abroad. From conducting force protection patrols on piers to managing corrections and investigations, MAs ensure safety in diverse environments ranging from expeditionary units to aircraft carriers.
This role exists to maintain order and security in high-stakes situations. You will work in a fast-paced, armed environment where attention to detail, sound judgment, and professionalism are essential. The position offers a dynamic day-to-day life involving rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays, to provide 24/7 coverage. You will face stressful scenarios requiring calm decision-making, from responding to emergencies to managing crowd control during special events.
Career progression is built on increasing responsibility. As you qualify for specialized billets, you may advance to roles such as patrol supervisor, watch commander, kennel master, or investigator. The role integrates closely with other security forces, Marine units, NCIS, and joint partners depending on your assignment.
Your journey begins with Recruit Training, followed by Master-at-Arms Class "A" School at Lackland AFB. There, you will master the fundamentals of law enforcement, weapons handling, antiterrorism, and security operations. Advancement is driven by progressive on-the-job qualification through Personnel Qualification Standards and unit training.
The Navy offers extensive opportunities for specialization. You can attend advanced schools to earn Navy Enlisted Classifications (NECs) as a Military Working Dog Handler, Harbor Security Coxswain, Corrections Specialist, or Criminal Investigator. Career-long development includes leadership courses and warfare qualifications such as ESWS, EAWS, or NWS when assigned to qualifying commands.
To join the Master-at-Arms community, you must meet general enlistment standards, including U.S. citizenship or eligible residency, a high school diploma, and specific medical and physical fitness requirements. Most billets require eligibility for a security clearance and a clean legal history suitable for armed law enforcement duties.
For active duty, you will enlist directly into the rating and attend "A" School before reporting to an operational security force billet. Reserve opportunities may exist for qualified prior-service applicants or those seeking specific NECs. Because incentives, bonuses, and specific assignment outcomes depend on current Navy needs and policy, all applicants must confirm eligibility and current opportunities with an official Navy recruiter.
