Master-at-Arms (MA) Sailors form the backbone of the Navy's security, antiterrorism, and law enforcement capabilities. Their mission is to protect people, installations, ships, and strategic assets both at home and abroad. Whether stationed on bases, aboard aircraft carriers, or deployed in expeditionary environments, MAs serve as the first line of defense, conducting force protection, physical security, and policing operations.
This role is designed for those who thrive in a fast-paced, armed, and safety-critical environment. The day-to-day life involves a blend of high-stakes decision-making and disciplined routine. You will patrol installations and piers, stand sentry at access control posts, and manage the flow of personnel and vehicles. The work requires constant vigilance to detect weapons, contraband, or unauthorized items, as well as the ability to respond calmly to emergencies, accidents, and criminal activity.
As you progress, the role evolves from foundational security duties to specialized leadership. You may qualify for advanced billets such as patrol supervisor, watch commander, military working dog handler, or criminal investigator. The position demands a strong moral character, clean legal history, and the physical and mental resilience to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays, ensuring 24/7 coverage.
Assignments vary widely, ranging from Navy installations in the U.S. and overseas to the decks of aircraft carriers and strategic weapons facilities. You will work in diverse settings including flight lines, harbor security boats, patrol vehicles, kennels, armories, and security operations centers. The role often involves close integration with other security forces, Marine units, NCIS, and joint or host-nation partners.
The environment is dynamic and can be demanding. You will face stressful situations requiring quick judgment and strong communication skills. Opportunities for overseas, forward-deployed, and dependent-restricted tours are common, counting as sea duty for rotation purposes. This career path offers a unique blend of law enforcement, military operations, and security expertise.
Your journey begins with Recruit Training, followed by Master-at-Arms Class "A" School at Lackland AFB. Here, you will master the fundamentals of law enforcement, weapons handling, antiterrorism, and security operations. Advancement is driven by progressive on-the-job qualification through Personnel Qualification Standards and unit training.
The Navy offers extensive pathways for career-long development. You can pursue advanced schools to earn Navy Enlisted Classifications (NECs) in specialized fields such as Military Working Dog Handler, Harbor Security Coxswain, Corrections Specialist, or Criminal Investigator. Leadership growth is supported through warfare qualifications (such as ESWS, EAWS, or NWS) and senior enlisted leader programs.
Reserve opportunities exist for qualified prior-service members or SELRES applicants, often requiring specific training or NECs. Prior-service Sailors from other ratings may also convert into the MA community based on community needs and screening.
To join the Master-at-Arms community, you must meet general enlistment standards, including U.S. citizenship or eligible residency, a high school diploma, and specific age, medical, and character requirements. Eligibility for a security clearance is mandatory for most billets.
Interested candidates should contact an official Navy recruiter to discuss current incentives, eligibility, and the application process. Recruiters can provide details on specific programs, bonuses, or loan repayment options that may be available at the time of application. Note that actual assignments, training opportunities, and incentives depend on Navy needs, individual performance, and current policy.
The Navy is an equal opportunity employer. We consider qualified applicants regardless of background, race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, or veteran status. Our culture values professionalism, integrity, and the courage to act in the face of danger. We seek individuals who are committed to serving the nation and upholding the highest standards of law enforcement and security.
