Master-at-Arms (MA) Sailors form the backbone of the Navy's security, antiterrorism, and law enforcement capabilities. Their mission is to protect people, installations, ships, and strategic assets both at home and abroad. From conducting force protection patrols on piers to managing corrections and investigations, MAs operate in diverse environments ranging from aircraft carriers and expeditionary units to secure bases overseas.
This role exists to ensure the safety and security of Navy operations through a combination of policing, physical security, and tactical response. MAs are the first line of defense, responsible for controlling access, inspecting personnel and vehicles, and responding to emergencies with calm judgment and professionalism.
You will work in a fast-paced, safety-critical environment where attention to detail is paramount. Your duties may include standing sentry at access control posts, enforcing traffic regulations, investigating incidents, or operating security vehicles and boats. The work often involves rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays, to provide 24/7 coverage.
As you progress, you will take on increasing responsibility, potentially supervising junior personnel or qualifying for specialized billets such as Military Working Dog Handler, Harbor Security Coxswain, or Criminal Investigator. You will work closely with other security forces, Marine units, NCIS, and joint partners, integrating into a tight-knit community dedicated to mission readiness.
The journey begins with Recruit Training, followed by Master-at-Arms Class "A" School at Lackland AFB. Here, you will master the fundamentals of law enforcement, weapons handling, antiterrorism, and security operations. Your career is built on progressive on-the-job qualification through Personnel Qualification Standards and unit training.
The Navy offers extensive opportunities for advancement and specialization. You can pursue advanced schools to earn Navy Enlisted Classifications (NECs) in areas like Corrections, Small Arms Instruction, or Protective Services. Career-long development is supported by leadership courses and warfare qualifications, ensuring you grow alongside the community.
To serve as a Master-at-Arms, you must meet general enlistment standards, including U.S. citizenship or eligible residency, a high school diploma, and strict medical and physical fitness requirements. A clean legal history and strong moral character are essential for armed law enforcement duties.
If you are interested in this career path, the next step is to contact an official Navy recruiter. They can review your specific qualifications, discuss current incentives, and guide you through the screening process to determine eligibility for active duty or Reserve opportunities.
The Navy is an equal opportunity employer. We consider qualified applicants regardless of background, race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, or genetic information. Our culture values diversity and inclusion, fostering an environment where every Sailor can contribute to the mission.
