Master-at-Arms (MA) Sailors form the backbone of the Navy's security, antiterrorism, and law enforcement capabilities. Their mission is to protect people, installations, ships, and strategic assets both at home and abroad. From conducting force protection patrols on piers to managing corrections and investigations, MAs operate in diverse environments ranging from bases and aircraft carriers to expeditionary units and strategic weapons facilities.
This role is designed for individuals ready to serve in a fast-paced, armed, and safety-critical environment. You will be the first line of defense, responsible for access control, vehicle and personnel inspections, and responding to emergencies. The position offers a clear path for growth, allowing you to specialize in areas such as military working dogs, harbor security, or protective services while taking on increasing leadership responsibilities as you qualify for advanced billets like watch commander or investigator.
Life as a Master-at-Arms demands professionalism, sharp judgment, and attention to detail. You will work in a 24/7 operational environment, often rotating through nights, weekends, and holidays to ensure continuous security coverage. The role involves exposure to high-stress situations, requiring calm decision-making during emergencies, accidents, or criminal activity.
Your work environment will be dynamic, taking you from flight lines and security operations centers to patrol vehicles and harbor security boats. You will integrate closely with other security forces, Marine units, NCIS, and joint partners. As you progress, you will engage in ongoing qualification and requalification for weapons, use of force, and tactical skills, ensuring you remain ready for any mission.
Your journey begins with Recruit Training, followed by Master-at-Arms Class "A" School at Lackland AFB. Here, you will master the fundamentals of law enforcement, weapons handling, antiterrorism, and security operations. From there, you will report to an operational security force billet at an installation, ship, or expeditionary unit.
Career development is a core component of the rating. You will pursue progressive on-the-job qualifications and have opportunities to attend advanced schools to earn specialized Navy Enlisted Classifications, such as Military Working Dog Handler, Harbor Security Coxswain, or Criminal Investigator. The Navy supports career-long growth through leadership courses, warfare qualifications, and senior enlisted leader programs.
The Navy is an equal opportunity employer. We consider qualified applicants regardless of background, race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, or genetic information. As a Master-at-Arms, you will join a community that values integrity, honor, and commitment to the mission. We seek individuals with strong moral character and a clean legal history, ready to uphold the highest standards of armed law enforcement and security.
To join the Master-at-Arms community, you must meet general enlistment standards, including U.S. citizenship or eligible residency, a high school diploma, and the ability to pass medical, physical, and background screening. Eligibility for a security clearance is required for most billets.
