Master-at-Arms (MA) Sailors serve as the Navy's core security, antiterrorism, and law enforcement capability. Their mission is to protect people, installations, ships, and strategic assets both at home and abroad. These Sailors conduct force protection, physical security, and policing across diverse environments, including bases, aboard ships, at sea, and in expeditionary settings. The role offers opportunities to specialize in critical areas such as military working dogs, harbor security, corrections, investigations, or protective services.
You will work in a fast-paced, armed, and safety-critical environment where attention to detail, sound judgment, and professionalism are essential. The role demands frequent duty in rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays, to ensure 24/7 security coverage. You will face stressful situations involving emergencies, accidents, or criminal activity, requiring calm decision-making and strong communication skills. The career path involves ongoing qualification and requalification in weapons, use of force, tactical skills, and physical fitness. As you progress, you will take on increasing responsibility, qualifying for specialized billets such as patrol supervisor, watch commander, kennel master, or investigator.
Assignments vary widely, ranging from Navy installations in the U.S. and overseas to aircraft carriers, other ships, and expeditionary security units. You may work primarily on bases, piers, flight lines, harbor security boats, and in patrol vehicles, kennels, armories, and security operations centers. The role offers opportunities for overseas, forward-deployed, and dependent-restricted tours that count as sea duty for rotation. You will work in close integration with other security forces, Marine units, NCIS, and joint or host-nation partners, depending on your specific billet.
Your journey begins with Recruit Training followed by Master-at-Arms Class "A" School at Lackland AFB, where you will learn basic law enforcement, weapons handling, antiterrorism, patrol procedures, and security operations. Career development is progressive, featuring on-the-job qualification through Personnel Qualification Standards, watchstations, and unit training. Advanced schools are available to award Navy Enlisted Classifications such as Military Working Dog Handler, Harbor Security Coxswain, Corrections Specialist, and Criminal Investigator. The Navy supports career-long development through leadership courses, warfare qualifications (such as ESWS, EAWS, EXW, FMF, or NWS), and senior enlisted leader programs.
To join this community, you must meet general enlistment standards, including U.S. citizenship or legal residency, a high school diploma, and specific age, medical, vision, and dental requirements. A clean legal history and strong moral character are vital for armed law enforcement duties. You must be eligible for a security clearance and capable of meeting the Navy's physical fitness standards, including the ability to qualify with small arms. While specific incentives, bonuses, and special pays may be available, they change frequently and are subject to current Navy policy and needs. For the most accurate and up-to-date information regarding incentives, eligibility, and assignment opportunities, applicants should confirm details with an official Navy recruiter or authoritative Navy source.
The Navy is an equal opportunity employer. We consider qualified applicants regardless of background, race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, or veteran status.
