Master-at-Arms (MA) Sailors form the backbone of the Navy's security, antiterrorism, and law enforcement capabilities. Whether protecting people and strategic assets on land, aboard ships, or in expeditionary environments, MAs serve as the first line of defense for the fleet. This role is not just about enforcing rules; it is about maintaining order and safety in high-stakes, fast-paced environments where judgment and professionalism are critical.
You will be part of a close-knit community that integrates with Marine units, NCIS, and joint partners. The work is diverse, ranging from conducting force protection patrols and managing access control to investigating incidents and operating specialized equipment like military working dogs or harbor security boats. As you progress, you will take on increasing responsibility, potentially qualifying for specialized billets such as patrol supervisor, watch commander, or criminal investigator.
Life as a Master-at-Arms is dynamic and demanding. You will work in a safety-critical environment that often requires 24/7 coverage, meaning frequent duty in rotating shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays. The role exposes you to stressful situations involving emergencies, accidents, or criminal activity, requiring calm decision-making under pressure.
Your career will be defined by continuous development. You will undergo ongoing qualification and requalification in weapons, use of force, and tactical skills. Assignments may take you to Navy installations in the U.S. and overseas, aboard aircraft carriers, or with expeditionary security units. You may also face dependent-restricted tours and forward-deployed missions that count as sea duty.
Your journey begins with Recruit Training, followed by Master-at-Arms Class "A" School at Lackland AFB. Here, you will master the fundamentals of law enforcement, weapons handling, antiterrorism, and security operations. From there, you will move into progressive on-the-job training through Personnel Qualification Standards and unit-specific training.
The Navy offers robust pathways for advancement. You can pursue advanced schools to earn Navy Enlisted Classifications (NECs) as a Military Working Dog Handler, Harbor Security Coxswain, Corrections Specialist, or Criminal Investigator. Career-long development is supported by leadership courses, warfare qualifications (such as ESWS or EAWS), and senior enlisted leader programs.
To join the Master-at-Arms community, you must meet general enlistment standards, including U.S. citizenship or eligible residency, a high school diploma, and strict medical, vision, and dental requirements. A clean legal history and strong moral character are essential due to the armed nature of the duties.
Interested candidates should contact an official Navy recruiter to discuss eligibility, current incentives, and specific program requirements. Recruiters can provide details on Reserve opportunities, prior-service conversion options, and the current status of bonuses or special pays.
The Navy is an equal opportunity employer. We value diversity and welcome qualified applicants regardless of background. As a Master-at-Arms, you will uphold the highest standards of integrity and service, contributing to a culture that prioritizes the safety of the fleet and the nation.
