Master-at-Arms (MA) Sailors form the backbone of the Navy's security, antiterrorism, and law enforcement capabilities. What to Expect

You will work in a fast-paced, safety-critical environment where attention to detail, sound judgment, and professionalism are paramount. The role demands 24/7 coverage, meaning you will frequently work rotating shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays. You will face high-stress situations involving emergencies or criminal activity, requiring calm decision-making and strong communication skills. As you progress, you will take on increasing responsibility, qualifying for specialized billets like patrol supervisor, watch commander, or investigator. The job involves constant training and requalification in weapons, use of force, and tactical skills to maintain peak readiness.

Work Environment

Assignments vary widely, taking you to Navy installations in the U.S. and overseas, aboard ships, or with expeditionary security units. Your daily work may take place on bases, piers, flight lines, or aboard harbor security boats. You will integrate closely with security forces, Marine units, NCIS, and joint or host-nation partners. The role offers opportunities for overseas and forward-deployed tours, including dependent-restricted assignments that count as sea duty. You will operate in close-knit teams within security operations centers, kennels, armories, and patrol vehicles.

Pathways and Training

Your journey begins with Recruit Training followed by Master-at-Arms Class "A" School at Lackland AFB, where you will learn the fundamentals of law enforcement, weapons handling, and antiterrorism. Career development is progressive, built on on-the-job qualification through Personnel Qualification Standards and unit training. You will have opportunities to attend advanced schools to earn Navy Enlisted Classifications (NECs) in fields like Military Working Dog Handling, Harbor Security, Corrections, and Criminal Investigation. Long-term growth includes leadership courses, warfare qualifications, and senior enlisted leader programs.

Hiring and Application

To join the Master-at-Arms community, you must meet general enlistment standards, including U.S. citizenship or eligible residency, a high school diploma, and specific age, medical, and character requirements. Most billets require eligibility for a security clearance and a clean legal history suitable for armed law enforcement duties. You must be willing to deploy, accept sea duty, and work rotating shifts. Prior-service Sailors from other ratings may be eligible to convert into the MA rating based on community needs.
