Master-at-Arms (MA) Sailors form the backbone of the Navy's security, antiterrorism, and law enforcement capabilities. Their mission is to protect people, installations, ships, and strategic assets both at home and abroad. From conducting force protection patrols on piers to managing corrections and investigations, MAs operate in diverse environments ranging from aircraft carriers and expeditionary units to strategic weapons facilities.
This role exists to ensure the safety and security of Navy operations through a combination of policing, physical security, and specialized tactical skills. MAs are the first line of defense, responsible for controlling access to secure areas, inspecting vehicles and personnel, and responding to emergencies with calm judgment and professionalism.
You will work in a fast-paced, safety-critical environment where attention to detail is paramount. Your duties may include standing sentry at access control posts, enforcing traffic regulations, and investigating incidents or accidents. The role demands adaptability, as you may find yourself working rotating shifts—including nights, weekends, and holidays—to provide 24/7 coverage.
As you progress, you will take on increasing responsibility, potentially supervising junior personnel or qualifying for specialized billets such as Military Working Dog Handler, Harbor Security Coxswain, or Criminal Investigator. You will operate small arms, crew-served weapons, and security vehicles, often integrating closely with Marine units, NCIS, and joint partners depending on your assignment.
Your journey begins with Recruit Training, followed by Master-at-Arms Class "A" School at Lackland AFB. Here, you will master the fundamentals of law enforcement, weapons handling, antiterrorism, and patrol procedures. Advancement is driven by on-the-job qualification through Personnel Qualification Standards and unit training.
The Navy offers extensive opportunities for career-long development. You can pursue advanced schools to earn specific Navy Enlisted Classifications (NECs) in areas like corrections, protective services, or small arms instruction. Leadership growth is supported through warfare qualifications (such as ESWS or EAWS) and senior enlisted leader programs.
To join the Master-at-Arms community, you must meet general enlistment standards, including U.S. citizenship or eligible residency, a high school diploma, and passing medical, vision, and dental examinations. A clean legal history and strong moral character are essential due to the armed nature of the duties.
Interested candidates should contact an official Navy recruiter to discuss eligibility, current incentives, and specific program requirements. Recruiters can provide details on Reserve opportunities, prior-service conversion options, and the security clearance process required for most billets.
The Navy is an equal opportunity employer and values diversity. We consider qualified applicants regardless of background, race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, or status as a protected veteran. Joining the Master-at-Arms community means becoming part of a team dedicated to integrity, discipline, and the protection of the nation's interests.
