About the Role

Master-at-Arms (MA) Sailors form the backbone of the Navy's security, antiterrorism, and law enforcement capabilities. Their mission is to protect people, installations, ships, and strategic assets both at home and abroad. From conducting force protection patrols on piers to managing corrections and investigations, MAs operate in diverse environments ranging from expeditionary units to high-value unit escorts. The role offers a dynamic career path where Sailors can specialize in areas such as military working dogs, harbor security, or protective services, taking on increasing responsibility as they qualify for advanced billets like watch commander or investigator.

What to Expect

You will work in a fast-paced, armed, and safety-critical environment where attention to detail, sound judgment, and professionalism are paramount. The role demands 24/7 coverage, meaning you should expect frequent duty in rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays. You will face stressful situations involving emergencies, accidents, or criminal activity, requiring calm decision-making and strong communication skills. The career involves ongoing qualification and requalification in weapons, use of force, tactical skills, and physical fitness. Over time, you will gain expertise in operating small arms, crew-served weapons, and security vehicles, while supervising and training junior personnel.

Work Environment

Assignments vary widely, taking you to Navy installations in the U.S. and overseas, aboard aircraft carriers and other ships, and with expeditionary security units. Your daily work may take place on bases, piers, flight lines, harbor security boats, in patrol vehicles, kennels, armories, and security operations centers. The role offers opportunities for overseas, forward-deployed, and dependent-restricted tours that count as sea duty. You will work in close integration with other security forces, Marine units, NCIS, and joint or host-nation partners, depending on your specific billet.

Training and Advancement

Your journey begins with Recruit Training followed by Master-at-Arms Class "A" School at Lackland AFB, where you will learn the fundamentals of law enforcement, weapons handling, antiterrorism, and security operations. Advancement is driven by progressive on-the-job qualification through Personnel Qualification Standards and unit training. The Navy offers extensive opportunities for advanced schools that award specialized Navy Enlisted Classifications, such as Military Working Dog Handler, Harbor Security Coxswain, Corrections Specialist, and Criminal Investigator. Career-long development is supported by leadership courses, warfare qualifications (such as ESWS, EAWS, or NWS), and senior enlisted leader programs.

How to Apply

To join the Master-at-Arms community, you must meet general enlistment standards, including U.S. citizenship or eligible residency, a high school diploma, and specific age, medical, and character requirements. You must be eligible for a security clearance and possess the moral character and physical fitness required for armed law enforcement duties. Prior-service Sailors from other ratings may be able to convert into the MA rating based on community needs.
