Master-at-Arms (MA) Sailors form the backbone of the Navy's security, antiterrorism, and law enforcement capabilities. Their mission is to protect people, installations, ships, and strategic assets both at home and abroad. From conducting force protection patrols on piers to managing corrections and investigations, MAs operate in diverse environments ranging from bases and aircraft carriers to expeditionary units and strategic weapons facilities.
This role is designed for those who thrive in a fast-paced, safety-critical environment where attention to detail, sound judgment, and professionalism are paramount. You will be part of a close-knit team that integrates with Marine units, NCIS, and joint partners to secure high-value assets and maintain order during emergencies.
Your daily operations will vary based on your assignment, but you can expect to stand sentry, control access to secure areas, and perform inspections for weapons or contraband. You may enforce traffic regulations, investigate incidents, or manage crowd control during special events. The work often involves rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays, to ensure 24/7 coverage.
As you progress, you will take on increasing responsibility, potentially supervising junior personnel or qualifying for specialized billets such as Military Working Dog Handler, Harbor Security Coxswain, or Criminal Investigator. The role demands ongoing qualification in weapons, use of force, and tactical skills, ensuring you remain ready for the stresses of emergency response and criminal activity.
Your journey begins with Recruit Training, followed by Master-at-Arms Class "A" School at Lackland AFB. Here, you will master the fundamentals of law enforcement, weapons handling, antiterrorism, and security operations. From there, you will report to an operational security force billet at an installation, ship, or expeditionary unit.
Career development is continuous. You will advance through on-the-job qualification standards and have opportunities to attend advanced schools for specialized skills like corrections, small arms instruction, or protective services. Leadership courses and warfare qualifications (such as ESWS or EAWS) further support your growth into senior enlisted leadership roles.
To join the Master-at-Arms community, you must meet general enlistment standards, including U.S. citizenship or eligible residency, a high school diploma, and strict medical, physical, and character requirements. A clean legal history and the ability to obtain a security clearance are essential for armed law enforcement duties.
Interested candidates should contact an official Navy recruiter to discuss current incentives, eligibility, and the specific screening process. Reserve opportunities may also exist for qualified prior-service members or SELRES applicants, often requiring specific training or endorsements.
The Navy is an equal opportunity employer. We consider qualified applicants regardless of background, race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, marital status, national origin, disability, or protected veteran status. Our culture values integrity, discipline, and the courage to serve in some of the most challenging environments in the world.
