Master-at-Arms (MA) Sailors form the backbone of the Navy's security, antiterrorism, and law enforcement capabilities. Their mission is to protect people, installations, ships, and strategic assets both at home and abroad. From conducting force protection patrols on piers to managing corrections and investigations, MAs operate in diverse environments ranging from aircraft carriers and expeditionary units to strategic weapons facilities.
This role exists to ensure the safety and security of the Navy's most critical assets. You will work in a fast-paced, armed, and safety-critical environment where attention to detail, sound judgment, and professionalism are paramount. The day-to-day involves standing sentry, controlling access to secure areas, inspecting vehicles and personnel, and responding to emergencies. As you progress, you will take on increasing responsibility, potentially specializing in areas like military working dogs, harbor security, or protective services.
Assignments vary widely, taking you to Navy installations in the U.S. and overseas, aboard ships, or with expeditionary security units. You will work primarily on bases, piers, flight lines, and in security operations centers, often integrating closely with Marine units, NCIS, and joint partners. The role demands flexibility, with frequent duty in rotating shifts—including nights, weekends, and holidays—to provide 24/7 coverage. You may face stressful situations requiring calm decision-making and the willingness to deploy to forward-deployed or dependent-restricted tours.
Your journey begins with Recruit Training, followed by Master-at-Arms Class "A" School at Lackland AFB. There, you will learn the fundamentals of law enforcement, weapons handling, antiterrorism, and security operations. Advancement is driven by progressive on-the-job qualification through Personnel Qualification Standards and unit training. The Navy offers extensive opportunities for specialized training, allowing you to earn Navy Enlisted Classifications such as Military Working Dog Handler, Harbor Security Coxswain, Corrections Specialist, or Criminal Investigator. Career-long development includes leadership courses and warfare qualifications tailored to your specific command.
To join the Master-at-Arms community, you must meet general enlistment standards, including U.S. citizenship or eligible residency, a high school diploma, and strict medical, vision, and dental requirements. A clean legal history and strong moral character are essential for armed law enforcement duties. Eligibility for a security clearance is required for most billets.
Interested candidates should contact an official Navy recruiter to discuss current incentives, eligibility, and the application process. Recruiters can provide specific details on Reserve opportunities, prior-service conversion, and current policy regarding age limits and test scores.
The U.S. Navy is an equal opportunity employer. We consider qualified applicants regardless of background, race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, or veteran status. We are committed to building a diverse and inclusive force capable of meeting the complex challenges of modern security and law enforcement.
