Master-at-Arms (MA) Sailors form the backbone of the Navy's security, antiterrorism, and law enforcement capabilities. Whether protecting people and installations at home or strategic assets abroad, MAs operate in a fast-paced, armed environment where attention to detail, sound judgment, and professionalism are critical. This role exists to ensure the safety of the fleet and the nation by conducting force protection, physical security, and policing across bases, ships, and expeditionary environments.
Your work will be defined by 24/7 coverage, requiring frequent duty in rotating shifts that include nights, weekends, and holidays. You will stand sentry and access control posts, inspect vehicles and personnel for contraband, and enforce traffic regulations. The role demands calm decision-making during stressful situations involving emergencies or criminal activity. Over time, you will take on increasing responsibility, potentially supervising junior personnel or qualifying for specialized billets such as patrol supervisor, watch commander, or investigator.
Assignments vary widely, ranging from Navy installations in the U.S. and overseas to aircraft carriers and expeditionary security units. You may work on flight lines, harbor security boats, in patrol vehicles, or within security operations centers. The role often involves close integration with Marine units, NCIS, and joint or host-nation partners. Opportunities for overseas, forward-deployed, and dependent-restricted tours are common, counting as sea duty for rotation purposes.
The journey begins with Recruit Training followed by Master-at-Arms Class "A" School at Lackland AFB, where you will learn the fundamentals of law enforcement, weapons handling, and antiterrorism. Career development is progressive, moving through on-the-job qualification standards and unit training. MAs have the opportunity to attend advanced schools to earn specialized Navy Enlisted Classifications, such as Military Working Dog Handler, Harbor Security Coxswain, or Criminal Investigator. Long-term growth includes leadership courses and warfare qualifications like ESWS or EAWS.
To join the Master-at-Arms community, you must meet general enlistment standards, including U.S. citizenship or legal residency, a high school diploma, and eligibility for a security clearance. The process involves meeting medical, vision, and physical fitness standards, as well as passing background screening and the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB). Prior-service Sailors from other ratings may be able to convert into MA based on community needs. For specific details on current incentives, bonuses, or eligibility, applicants must confirm with an official Navy recruiter.
The Navy is an equal opportunity employer. We consider qualified applicants regardless of background, race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, or veteran status.
