Master-at-Arms (MA) Sailors form the backbone of the Navy's security, antiterrorism, and law enforcement capabilities. Their mission is to protect people, installations, ships, and strategic assets both at home and abroad. From conducting force protection patrols on piers to managing corrections and investigations, MAs operate in diverse environments ranging from bases and ships to expeditionary units. The role offers a dynamic career path where Sailors can specialize in areas such as military working dogs, harbor security, or protective services, evolving from entry-level watchstanders to supervisors and specialized experts.
Life as a Master-at-Arms takes place in a fast-paced, armed, and safety-critical environment where attention to detail, sound judgment, and professionalism are paramount. You will work in rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays, to ensure 24/7 security coverage. The role exposes you to high-stress situations involving emergencies, accidents, or criminal activity, requiring calm decision-making and strong communication skills. As you progress, you will take on increasing responsibility, qualifying for specialized billets such as patrol supervisor, watch commander, or investigator while maintaining rigorous standards in weapons, use of force, and physical fitness.
Assignments vary widely, taking you to Navy installations in the U.S. and overseas, aboard aircraft carriers and other ships, or with expeditionary security units and strategic weapons facilities. Your daily work may occur on bases, piers, flight lines, harbor security boats, in patrol vehicles, kennels, armories, and security operations centers. The role often involves close integration with other security forces, Marine units, NCIS, and joint or host-nation partners. Opportunities for overseas, forward-deployed, and dependent-restricted tours are common, counting as sea duty for rotation purposes.
The journey begins with Recruit Training followed by Master-at-Arms Class "A" School at Lackland AFB, where you will learn the fundamentals of law enforcement, weapons handling, antiterrorism, and security operations. Career development is progressive, driven by on-the-job qualification through Personnel Qualification Standards and unit training. Advanced opportunities allow for specialized Navy Enlisted Classifications, including Military Working Dog Handler, Harbor Security Coxswain, Corrections Specialist, and Criminal Investigator. Throughout your career, you will pursue leadership courses, warfare qualifications (such as ESWS, EAWS, or NWS), and senior enlisted leader programs.
To serve as a Master-at-Arms, you must meet general enlistment standards, including U.S. citizenship or eligible residency, a high school diploma, and specific age, medical, and character requirements. Most billets require eligibility for a security clearance and a clean legal history suitable for armed law enforcement duties. You must be willing to work rotating shifts, deploy, and accept assignment to sea duty and overseas locations. For prior-service Sailors, conversion into the MA rating is possible based on community needs and screening. Specific incentives, bonuses, and loan repayment options may be available but vary by program and current policy; these should be confirmed with an official Navy recruiter.
The U.S. Navy is an equal opportunity employer. We consider qualified applicants regardless of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, marital status, parental status, sexual orientation, gender identity, genetic information, disability, or protected veteran status.
