Master-at-Arms (MA) Sailors form the backbone of the Navy's security, antiterrorism, and law enforcement capabilities. Their mission is to protect people, installations, ships, and strategic assets both at home and abroad. From conducting force protection patrols on piers to managing corrections and investigations, MAs operate in diverse environments ranging from aircraft carriers and expeditionary units to strategic weapons facilities. The role offers a dynamic career path where Sailors can specialize in areas such as military working dogs, harbor security, or protective services, evolving from entry-level watchstanders to supervisors and investigators.
This is a fast-paced, armed, and safety-critical career where attention to detail, sound judgment, and professionalism are paramount. MAs work in a 24/7 environment, frequently rotating through shifts that include nights, weekends, and holidays to ensure continuous security coverage. The role involves exposure to high-stress situations, requiring calm decision-making and strong communication during emergencies, accidents, or criminal activities. As you progress, you will take on increasing responsibility, qualifying for specialized billets and leadership roles while maintaining rigorous standards in weapons handling, tactical skills, and physical fitness.
The journey begins with Recruit Training followed by Master-at-Arms Class "A" School at Lackland AFB, where you will master the fundamentals of law enforcement, weapons handling, and antiterrorism. Career development is driven by progressive on-the-job qualification through Personnel Qualification Standards and unit training. The Navy offers extensive opportunities for advanced schooling, allowing you to earn specialized Navy Enlisted Classifications (NECs) such as Military Working Dog Handler, Harbor Security Coxswain, Corrections Specialist, and Criminal Investigator. Long-term growth is supported by leadership courses, warfare qualifications, and senior enlisted leader programs.
The United States Navy is an equal opportunity employer. We consider qualified applicants regardless of background, race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, or genetic information. We are committed to building a diverse and inclusive force that reflects the nation it serves.
