Master-at-Arms (MA) Sailors serve as the Navy's backbone for security, antiterrorism, and law enforcement. Their mission is to protect people, installations, ships, and strategic assets both at home and abroad. From conducting force protection patrols on piers to managing corrections and investigations, MAs operate in diverse environments ranging from aircraft carriers and expeditionary units to strategic weapons facilities.
This is a fast-paced, armed, and safety-critical career where attention to detail, sound judgment, and professionalism are paramount. You will work in a 24/7 environment, often rotating through nights, weekends, and holidays to ensure continuous security coverage. The role demands the ability to remain calm and decisive during emergencies, accidents, or criminal activity, while maintaining a strong law enforcement presence during special events.
Your journey begins with Recruit Training, followed by Master-at-Arms Class "A" School at Lackland AFB. There, you will master the fundamentals of law enforcement, weapons handling, antiterrorism, and security operations. As you progress, you will undergo on-the-job qualification through Personnel Qualification Standards and unit training.
The career offers significant growth and specialization. You may advance to leadership roles such as patrol supervisor or watch commander, or pursue advanced schools to become a Military Working Dog Handler, Harbor Security Coxswain, Corrections Specialist, or Criminal Investigator. Career-long development includes leadership courses and warfare qualifications like ESWS, EAWS, and NWS, depending on your assignment.
Assignments vary widely, taking you to Navy installations in the U.S. and overseas, aboard ships, or with expeditionary security units. You will work primarily on bases, piers, flight lines, and in security operations centers, often integrating closely with Marine units, NCIS, and joint partners. The role includes opportunities for overseas, forward-deployed, and dependent-restricted tours that count as sea duty.
To serve as a Master-at-Arms, you must meet general enlistment standards, including U.S. citizenship or eligible residency, a high school diploma, and strict medical, vision, and dental requirements. A clean legal history and strong moral character are essential for armed law enforcement duties. You must also be eligible for a security clearance and comfortable working in uniform, carrying firearms, and accepting deployment.
For those interested in the Reserve component, opportunities exist in Navy Security Force and Maritime Expeditionary Security units, often requiring prior training or specific Navy Enlisted Classifications. Prior-service Sailors from other ratings may also convert into the MA community based on community needs.
The U.S. Navy is an equal opportunity employer. We consider qualified applicants regardless of background, race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, marital status, national origin, disability, or protected veteran status. We are committed to building a diverse and inclusive force that reflects the nation it serves.
