Carilion Clinic, in partnership with the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine (VTCSOM) and the Department of Surgery, is seeking a Section Chief to lead a dynamic and growing team of six surgeons and over 12 advanced practice providers. This clinic-based academic program offers remarkable prospects in teaching, research, and clinical surgery.

The Section of Cardiothoracic Surgery has served the region for over 40 years, providing open heart surgery and working closely with referring physicians to ensure exceptional, personalized care.
The team is committed to pioneering a new era in cardiovascular health by building knowledge through research and education. Our faculty are actively involved in educating medical students, residents from multiple training programs, allied health science students, and undergraduate and graduate students from Virginia Tech and Radford University.
The Section Chief will direct the clinical, educational, and research activities for the Section, leading a group that provides comprehensive, multi-disciplinary care supported by state-of-the-art technology. This role involves managing people and programs, developing integrated collaborative models of care, and fostering team building.
The position is situated within the newly opened Crystal Spring Tower, home of the Carilion Cardiovascular Institute (CVI). Opened in July 2025, this 10-story signature building features 7 dedicated cardiovascular operating rooms (including 3 Cardiothoracic, 2 Hybrid, and 2 General Vascular), 76 inpatient beds, 9 EP and Cath Labs, MRI, CT, and additional testing. The CVI is ranked by U.S. News as a top 3 hospital in Virginia and is rated as high-performing in Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm repair, Lung Cancer Surgery, Heart Bypass Surgery, TAVR, Heart Attack, and Stroke.
Our Cardiothoracic Surgeons partner with Carilion's Aortic and Endovascular Center and Structural Heart teams to offer advanced solutions. The group holds the AMSECT Pillar award for its perfusion program and the ELSO Gold Center of Excellence award for ECMO.
