About the Role
A Resource Nurse at UM Shore Regional Health (UMSRH) Health (UMSRH) serves as a clinical expert and educational pillar for the nursing division. This role is dedicated to providing direct support to all members of the nursing team members, including new hires, nurse leaders, and the charge nurse, manager, director, educator, nurse resident, and preceptors. The primary mission is to ensure safe, high-quality, and compassionate patient care through expert-level bedside education, coaching, mentoring, and guidance in the care of patients, families, the community, and in collaboration with the healthcare team.
The Resource Nurse acts as a vital resource for the nursing team, facilitating the successful transition of all new nursing hires into the organization. This position requires active communication with charge nurses and leadership to maintain standards of care across all units.
Day in the Life
The Resource Nurse provides comprehensive support across various clinical environments, including adult inpatient units, the Emergency Department (ED), and the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU). Rounding responsibilities include monitoring patients in observation, medical, surgical, critical care, heart and vascular, adult obstetrics, and inpatient/outpatient PACU. Rounding on psychiatry is conducted at the request of the unit charge nurse.
A significant portion of the role involves identifying and managing "at-risk" patients. This includes reviewing patients based on NEWS scores, vital signs, lab results, diagnostic results, and the use of antibiotics or supplemental O2. High-risk patients may require non-invasive positive pressure ventilation (NIPPV), high-flow nasal cannula, peritoneal dialysis, tracheostomy care, chest tubes, or those who have recently returned from a procedure/recovery area with or without sedation.
The Resource Nurse also rounds on patients transferred from the critical care unit or higher level of care within the last 24 hours. In non-urgent deteriorating patients, the Resource Nurse assists the bedside RN to assess patients for normal vital signs or diagnostic trends to note changes that may require further evaluation. This includes reviewing potential causes of abnormal VS/trends/diagnostics.
In the event of emergencies, the Resource Nurse responds to all Medical Emergencies, Code Blue, Brain Attacks, and clinical emergency alerts. The Resource Nurse also assists with patient management and expedites necessary treatment interventions until the patient is transferred. All assessments, treatments, interventions, communication, and care delivered are documented in the Medical Record as care is completed.

Requirements

- verifiedCurrent RN license in Maryland or compact state
- verified5 years RN experience, including 2 years critical care
- verifiedBLS-HCP certification required

- verifiedMaster of Science in Nursing preferred
- verifiedCCRN, CEN, or CMC certification preferred
